Thembe's Cloth
by
Glenda Ralph Hay
Thembe's Cloth is Glenda's first book, a novel about South Africa. The novel is about two girls, Thembe and Kristi, who are born on opposite sides of the racial divide in South Africa. Their deep bond is threatened by separation under the harsh rules of apartheid. Thembe's extraordinary musical talent reunites them as South Africa manages its transition to a new 'Rainbow Nation.'

Glenda Ralph Hay was born in Durban, South Africa, and spent her childhood in Kokstad. She moved to Pietermartzburg with her family and attended Wykeham School, wearing the uniform, complete with a broad-brimmed Panama hat, with great pride. After graduation, she travelled to London and Europe with school friends, then to Australia, where she lived and worked in Brisbane and Perth for two years.

Glenda met her husband, Stephen, in an obscure Austrian sky resort, Neustift, and returned to live in Sydney. They raised two sons, James and Robert, in a wine region, Mudgee, a small farming town not unlike Kokstad.

After seven years, Glenda and her family moved to the island of Jersey, just fourteen miles from the Normandy coast of France. They lived in Jersey for twenty years. Their next stop was Wilmington, North Carolina, where they lived for seven years.

Now that her sons are grown and establishing lives of their own, the coming year will see more changes for Glenda and her husband, with a move back to Europe.

Thembe's Cloth is drawn from Glenda's childhood memories growing up in Kokstad, South Africa.
